At present, infertility affects about 15% of couples. This is a significant problem, namely in economically developed countries where, according to the attainable data, the percentage of infertile couples is slightly increasing.
According to the World Health Organization, human infertility is rated as disease. It is defined as a state where despite a regular sexual life a woman will not get pregnant in the course of one year. According to an Anglo-Saxon terminology, infertility is also a state where a woman can get pregnant but is not able to carry the baby to term. In the Czech terminology, we sometimes use for these cases the term “infertility”.
The approach towards the treatment of infertility was dramatically changed by present modern procedures. The first child from extra-corporeal impregnation was born in England in 1978. Since then the procedures of assisted reproduction have been improving very fast. A lot of information came through the large number of research from the field of human reproduction. Step by step, a new multi-disciplinary field of reproduction medicine developed. At present, new procedures of treatment give a high chance to infertile couples to have their own child.
An infertility treatment is demanding not only physically but psychically, as well. To limit their insecurity and alleviate their fears, we recommend to our patients to get first acquainted with the procedures of treatment and to study carefully all our materials. In case of any questions, they can turn to our physicians or nurses who will be happy to give them any needed explanations.
